Dr. Richard Kiel

A native of the Central Valley, Dr. Richard Kiel grew up in Coarsegold and Oakhurst before graduating from Yosemite High School and earning his Bachelor’s degree Summa Cum Laude from California State University, Fresno. He went on to complete his medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine in 2008. Driven by a desire to serve his community, Dr. Kiel returned to the Valley to complete his training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, followed by a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at UCSF. He is board- certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology.

As the only ACGME-accredited fellowship trained Advanced Heart Failure physician in the Central Valley, Dr. Kiel has been instrumental in expanding access to life-saving heart failure treatments for local patients. His unmatched expertise in advanced heart failure care makes him an essential resource for those with complex cardiac conditions. In partnership with Community Medical Systems, Dr. Kiel helped establish the Advanced Heart Failure Program, allowing patients in the Valley to receive advanced treatments, including evaluations for heart transplants, left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), and CardioMEMS, with most therapies available locally.

Before starting Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists, Dr. Kiel served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at UCSF Fresno, where he was the Program Director for the Cardiology Fellowship Program. His mission was to train the next generation of cardiologists, with the hope that many would continue to practice in the Central Valley, ensuring high-quality cardiovascular care for the community. In addition, Dr. Kiel was a coach for the UCSF PRIME medical school program, where he emphasized the importance of evidence-based, compassionate, and patient-centered care—a philosophy that guides his own practice.

Dr. Kiel has been recognized for his contributions to cardiology with numerous awards, including the American College of Cardiology California Chapter’s Excellence in Cardiology Fellowship Award and the Central California Veterans Hospital’s Excellence in Physician Values Award.
